The day north of Belfast

Every Causeway day leaves Belfast at nine. They differ after that.

The Giant's Causeway is an hour and a quarter up the Antrim coast and hardly anyone drives themselves. The day out is the product here, so the choice is really about what else gets fitted in around it.

Six kinds of Belfast day

Belfast sells six kinds of day, and they barely overlap.

Basalt columns and a rope bridge. A cab through the peace line. Westeros in a beech avenue. The yard that built the ship, the city on foot, and a bowl of stew at the end of it.

Westeros, County Antrim

Westeros is ninety minutes out of Belfast.

Winterfell is a walled estate in County Down. The Iron Islands are a harbour at Ballintoy where the fishing boats still work. The Kingsroad is an avenue of beeches a family planted in 1775 to give the house a decent approach. The standing sets are north of the city and open to the public.

Belfast by cab

The black taxi tours run along the peace line.

Drivers take you down the Falls and the Shankill, past the painted gables and the gates that are still closed at night, and talk about the street they grew up on. Most run about two hours. What you hear depends on who is driving.

Northern Ireland by price

What a day out in Northern Ireland costs.

Three price bands, and the whole catalogue inside them. Belfast is cheap to see. The coast takes a whole day and charges like it.

$40 to $100

The full coast days, the studio tour, and most of the black taxi runs.

$100 and up

Private drivers, the whole car to yourself, and the long combination days.

Queen's Island

Belfast has stopped apologising for the Titanic.

She was built at Harland and Wolff and the city has made a museum of the fact. The building stands on the old slipway at the height of the hull; the tender that carried her passengers out is still in the water beside it. The two yellow cranes behind it are the ones you can see from anywhere in Belfast.

Booked before Belfast

Four things here that need a slot before you land.

Almost nothing in Northern Ireland needs planning. These four do. They run on timed entry and small vehicles, and the good slots go weeks out.

  1. 01Titanic Belfast Entrance Ticket: Titanic Visitor Experience Including SS NomadicEntry is by timed slot with a cap on each one, and the morning slots go first all summer.
  2. 02Game of Thrones Studio Tour Admission TicketThe studio sits north of the city and admission is timed. There is no turning up on spec.
  3. 03Game of Thrones Winterfell Locations TrekSmall groups, costumes handed out at the gate, and one departure a day outside the season.
  4. 04Giants Causeway, Rope Bridge, Carrickfergus Castle and Dark Hedges TourThe National Trust sells timed crossings and caps the number on the bridge, so the coast days that include it hold a slot.
When it rains in Belfast

Rain is the normal weather here. Plan the indoor half first.

The coast day runs whatever the sky is doing, and the Causeway in weather is arguably the better version. It is the city that needs an answer for a wet afternoon: a museum built into a slipway, a Victorian gaol, a working still, and two hours in the back of a cab.
